Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
