Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 national vote.
