Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
