In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
