Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
